Nica and Grady had decided to meet at the park where Lucas’s rugby match was taking place, since Nica would be coming directly from In Bloom and might be a few minutes late. Luckily, she finished work with plenty of time, and Lauren and Tilly volunteered to transport everything to the venue, so Nica was free to leave.

She arrived at the park a few minutes early and searched the crowd for Grady. According to his text message, he was already there, hanging around talking to Lucas and a few other friends.

Nica eyed the field carefully. It wasn’t well marked, and she didn’t want to stroll onto the field accidentally. The two teams were warming up and seemed to be running around haphazardly. Of course, Nica knew nothing about the rules, moves, or strategy in rugby, so they could have been running plays.

She sensed Grady before she actually saw him. There was a large group of people huddled near the sideline, shouting at the players. She paused about fifteen feet behind the group and looked for Grady. She couldn’t hear or see him, but she was confident that he was in that group.

A whistle blew, and the players began to run toward the sideline. The large group in front of her started to disperse, and there he was. He was talking to his friend Truman, whom she recognized from the night at the gym. Grady laughed and threw his head back, causing Nica to smile though she couldn’t hear what had made him laugh.

Grady checked his watch and began looking around. One corner of her mouth perked up as she watched him. He was dressed appropriately. He wore black track pants, running shoes, and a gray hoodie. Other than at the gym, she’d never seen him dressed so casually. It was a nice look for him. Not so stuffy. She liked it. It was more in line with her normal attire.

Since it was fall and the weather was turning, she was in jeans, lined boots, a sweater, and an oversized jacket. If they were going to sit on bleachers, she wanted to make sure her bum wasn’t too close to a metal seat. After years of participating in sports herself and cheering on family members, she knew to be prepared for any possible weather. She had two duffel bags stashed behind the seat in her truck with emergency clothing, outerwear, and first aid kits.

Grady finally spotted her in the crowd. He patted Truman on the shoulder and said something Nica couldn’t hear. Truman turned and gave her a wave. Grady left him standing with the others and approached her, with a big smile. She felt as though the sun had come out, though it was just as cloudy and gray as it had been all morning.

“Hey! So glad you made it before the start of the match,” he said as he approached. He held out his hand for her to shake, and she did, a little disappointed that it wasn’t a hug.
